That game is so fucking obtuse, though. I read the instruction booklet front to back and I still barely understand how to take care of my Digimon. Plus your Digimon dies way too quickly and makes the game too stressful without making that stress meaningful like in Pikmin.

Oh, christ, I know. It's a game where you literally need a walkthrough open on a laptop next to you. I recently started playing again on an emulator (I've bought it twice before so I think I'm justified) and I still fucked up getting an Ultimate twice before I got Megadramon.
The time limit is maddening, true, and combat is fucking abysmal, but I honestly love the game so much.

I think it's because the Pokémon show, game, and cards all contained every Pokemon, making the overall world very cohesive across the franchise. Digimon had a shitton of Digimon from the start, and going to the games, show, and cards, you'd be hardpressed to see a lot of familiar faces in different media. Plus Pokemon had a whole social aspect with the trading that was required to catch them all (the advertised point of the franchise), which meant word could spread quickly and you had to play Pokemon to play with all your friends.

Basically, Pokemon was just marketted better.

I think it can be said the objectively Pokemon has better games.

Sorry, I can't into reading comprehension. If it's specifically the anime, then Pokemon started airing in 1998 in the US (1997 in Japan but that's irrelevant here). Digimon started airing in 1999 in the US.

They are both based on the same yokai. Plenty of things share the same basis, so the complaint that one was copying the other, that some creatures share design similarities with others, is gross oversimplification.

There's plenty of "cutsey" Digimon that look similar to some Pokemon, just like there are Digimon that look like stuff you'd find in SMT.

That's why I like Digimon. It doesn't have the same limits as Pokemon, they are just data. Depending on what kind of Data, they can have any form. Depending on the kind of data they absorb, they can evolve into any number of things.

It's just a lot more interesting to me.

I actually like plenty of digimon, but it's a completely different aesthetic.
Digimon seemed to try for an older demographic, making everything kind of gritty and realistic. Pokemon sought to keep things simple, so even the more badass mons retained a sense of appeal and cuteness.

Common complaint about the new mons is the superfluous details and spikes for the sake of edgy.

That's the problem though. It felt unsubstantial in efforts to become "edgy and dark". The characters are "hailed" as deep yet after watching they felt more cardboard cutouts than Savers' cast. At least Savers can attest to being interesting.

Speaking of said artist, the one behind it pretty much has copy-paste in her work.

People hated it for not being 100% like the first three. According to nostalgiafags nothing is ever allowed to be different in any way.

Frontier and Savers are my two favorite seasons, with Adventure and Tamers in second place.

I mean it was done pretty well, most of the time, but it surprises me that the writers would go through that much trouble to stick a few religious references into a children's show.

Because, unlike America, Japan isn't afraid to use religions in their stories. Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christian, Norse, everything is fair game. And they don't use the shows as propaganda for or against religions, they're simply part of the story.

Americans put religious stuff in their shows too sometimes. It's not as often and it's mostly always Christian, but it's also a lot more subtle, most of the time. The Japanese do it a little bit ham-handedly, imo.

I think the Manga is the one place where Digimon and Pokémon are on even footing. Digimon manga is about as good as the anime, especially V-Tamer and Next, if you ask me, although it does have some shit (Chronicle). And then there's Pokémon Adventure, which is the best version of Pokemon out there.
