Start with the originals Red/Blue (Blue is the DS version btw)

Then move on to Explorers of Sky

And if you have a 3DS you can try Magnagates altough it doesn't seem to be promissing

I played Red originally and really enjoyed it, the story's actually pretty great. I remember it a lot more than Time, but I think they were pretty similar. Time was great too but being in Wigglytuff's guild was annoying. So I'd agree with >>11974512
Red/Blue first then one of the other games. Never played Sky so I'm not sure how it differs but it probably has some extra dungeons.

Magnagate feature is a dud, curtailed volume of content, easier than Explorers of Sky. If you play Sky first, then GTI will seem like a doddle.

Explorers of Sky: Decent story, passable graphics, great music. A lot more content than GTI, and quite a bit harder.

Don't bother with the other games

Play them in their actual order of release, so you don't get fucked by the weird mechanics if some day you decide to go to an older game of the series.
Best way should be Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Sky then Gates to Infinity.

Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Sky. GBA games are for scrubs, so don't get Red Rescue Team, and Time and Darkness are absolute shit compared to Sky (think Diamond and Pearl compared to Platinum). I don't have Gates to Infinity yet, so I can't help you there.

They add a lot in the game with extra chapters, options an even places like the Spinda Cafe that add a lot to the game. I wouldn't recommend time/dark to anyone now that Sky is available
