There are nearly 50 cross-generational evolutions and each time Gamefreak seems to try hard not to break continuity. The only exceptions are Lickilicky and Mamoswine, who only had access to those moves all the way back in gen 2. If this weren't the case, they probably just would have had Eevee evolve into Leafeon via a Leaf Stone.
