But that just makes the evolutions more disjointed. With little exception, the evolutions show a clear progression from their smaller counterpart to their larger counterpart. Removing the middle evolution makes the progression more random.

Also Serperior has the coolest visual progression of growth out of all of them.

The only one that really looks like it could be a real evolution like in Squirtle/Blastoise. And that's because it makes no sense for Squirtle's tail to grow big and white, and then get smaller than it originally was.

Not knocking Wartortle though, he's awesome.

Kinda reminds me of digimon during the rookie->champion transition, where with just one evolution they got HUGE. Now i am imagining how would their "ultimate" forms looks like.

well i think 3 stage evolutions are the most balanced game wise

this is probably part of the reason GF went back and gave so many pokemon new evolutions and new prevos too
