trip was kind of edgy, he actually showed happiness at times though and had a caring nature for his pokemon. Paul was a raging asshole who never got happy, he smiled, but never really showed the emotion happiness.

I liked Paul because of how despicable he was, and the fact that it payed off when Ash and Infernape finally defeated him, you were actually happy for them both, plus Paul being redeemed was a nice thing to see, but with Trip, it was just the same thing again, except that Trip was never likable, to me anyway

Then it's a harsh training but it's still a training.
It would be more of a dick thing if he would just kick his pokemon in balls without any reason or maybe eat defeated pokemon.
Imagine if he would eat Chimchar instead of dropping him. Shit would probably be delicious.

Ash/Paul built off established ground causing growth and conflict for both trainers over the course of a whole saga. Ash/Gary was basically 2 rival battles over the course of 3 seasons with pretty much no development whatsoever until the Johto League battle. You pretty much forgot Gary even existed.

The only reason he was portrayed as a 'villain' in any way is because Ash didn't agree with his ideals.

Paul was never really abusive.

He's like this guy here, who Ash ACTUALLY understood wasn't abusive in the end.

Just because you don't agree with it doens't mean his style of training is wrong.
