I always wondered, why did the explosions do that strobe light when they exploded? Couldn't a stock smoke and fire explosion worked just as fine?

Because Pikachu blew up the missiles and caused the strobing, Porygon and his evolutions are blamed and exiled from the anime.

Reminds me of Genesis, where the serpent was the one who fucked things up but humanity was the one punished with eternal pain and torment.

The only reason we don't have the porygon episode is that the news of Pokemon causing seizures in japan got to the US before Pokemon even came out. There were tons of stories about some obscure Japanese show called "Pocket Monsters" causing seizures, which were thrown into the usual "Devil did X" sermons at the time. Then urban legend made it worse than it actually was, but they did realize there was a problem and the entire industry went back and realized the cheap animation tactic of flashing colors was a bad idea.

Apparently you had to be watching it on TV to see the full effects. Something about the strobe lights syncing perfectly with the TV's refresh rate which intensified the effect or some shit.
