pick one with many responses, or a hack of the month

If you want some decent hacks, the nuzlocke forums has a way better shit-ratio than everything else. I would consider Yet Another Fire Red Hack the best Gen III hack ever, with new abilities, an original 151dex with pokés from every gen, new moves from later gens, and a reasonable level curve. It's on pokécommunity too but is made by a nuzfag.

if that is too simple, try touhoumon 1.5* it has move changes and ability changes as well
also touhoumon 1.8 for a complete new set of types. well... not completly new
also touhoumon another world for new story + new mons + new moves... it is as if you are playing a new gen game, only it still has gen3 mechanics.

"Actual hacks" are usually pretty bad. Let's talk about Victory Fire, Flora Sky or even Ruby Destiny: praised and terribad hacks. The only good actual hacks are Vega if you moonrunes and want fakemons, or Agastya's touhoumon emerald.

Ruby Destiny was pretty far out. Sometimes too much liberty was taken to the point of annoyance (base 175 moves on fakemon evolutions etc.), but the overall quality and especially the exploration factor was top notch.

Currently running through Flora Sky. Nothing out of the ordinary so far, good or bad.

I never said anything about the quality of these certain hacks. The OP just asked for rom hacks, and those are pretty much the starting point. If he asked for a 365 version or anything I would have directed him to the sideshow project you prasie that much.

The whole thing of broken-ness makes it really bad. The whole plot is terrible, I won't even talk about the grammar errors, and the hack quality is sometimes horrible with all of the scripting errors. Also, some sprites are... Let's say, hideous. Overall, this isn't what I would expect from a hack that got HACK OF THE YEAR SEVERAL TIMES.

I didn't play Flora Sky, but from general critic it seems more bad than good, but at least, apparently it's decent.

Suggesting bad hacks isn't the point of this thread, since OP asked for recomendations, not random hacks. I'm not praising the Sideshow at all, it's just that the quality of sideshow projects is usually significantly higher than the quality of """"real"""" hacks.

quality =/= enjoyment
there are people who enjoy playing new stories, fanfic hacks, etc. Making a good hack is hard, making a good sideshow project is compareably easy.

That's true too, even if I enjoy a quality hack with a decent storyline than a new hack with a terrible storyline. But that's just my opinion
though I disagree with the "sideshow project" thing. I'm not talking about 386 hacks, but about real ones with a lot of additions, town layout changes, new moves, new movepools, new pokémon, etc.

I like RijonAdventures. It feels more like a 'traditional' Pokemon game than most hacks, which have the tendency to throw in a bunch of weird, convoluted plot points.

I remember playing a hack where the player character was a cyborg or something and had to escape from a lab. Unnecessary bullshit like that ruins the whole thing for me.

Flora Sky is alright, but there are lots of little things about it that get to me (mostly the use of DS textures and soooo many grammar errors). I like the idea of Gen V mons in Gen III games, because I prefer playing Pokemon using my PSP and a DS emulator for the PSP never really formulated. So I can't use the Gen V's in most games.

If there was a way to expand the Pokedex in RSE/FRLG to 649, I think that'd make for some really cool games.
