I remember when I was a child, I had an innate craving for something I could carry around, something I could play with or just look at, something which would serve as a personal mascot, or a weapon, or a friend. I tried several toys over the years, or card decks, etc, but none of them sufficed. Pokemon fit that bill perfectly. Sure, not everyone would want that, but I remember that being a very prominent mental craving.
The reason the Pokemon world seems so appealing is literally because there is no loneliness; when you have Pokemon you can share anything. Even the weirdest people like super nerds or firebreathers have partners they can bond with. We don't have that, so we become bitter, alone and paranoid.
