Hey /vp/

When you start a new adventure, do you just give the protagonist your own name, or do you use one of the premade options, or do you choose something original?

Sounds petty, I know, but I'm curious what others do...

I name from Pokemon Special because I like it and it feels like Red would be the odd one out if I didn't. He's the only one whose "canon" name is a color.

I use the change gender code to train my pokemon (doing so makes the game think all the pokemon you previously caught are traded, so double EXP), so I use ALEX because it's a gender-neutral name. Speaking of which, that's the only one I can ever think of, does anyone else know of something else I could use?

My roomate in college downloaded a modulator on his laptop and asked me what to name his character. I said "Batman" -_-
So when people would come to his character going, "I need your help Batman!" "Batman, you're our only hope," I got every ounce of my seven god damn chuckles.

I use a nickname but currently I am actually looking for a good four letter name so I can carry my character to older games like Dragon Warrior.

Slightly related I Started to name the first gen rival JACK. Gary got kinda old and it feel odd using a canon character on a nuzlocke which is basically a fanfic anyway. It is more fun to make up your own rival anyway if you going all out on a comic.

Also my first run on Gold I name my rival ???. I thought I was just asking the question. I heard they fix that on HG/SS.

I then used a couple of nicknames of mine, and now I name the protag's after my friends (but they don't know that)

If i'm going back to play emerald or something, i'd call myself ''Brendan''

Soemtimes I'll do a manga-team playthrough and play as Ruby instead, with Swamper/Delcatty/Mightyena etc

The first time, I misspelled my name, and was forever Daviw.
After I started using whatever names I felt like, most frequently Quantum and Atom, and then naming my pokemon after subatomic particles or physicists.

Currently I'm making up everything randomly so I'm playing as Bitton.

On my main run throughs I use my name, recently when I've been playing random past games I use the version name so can tell where they came from when I transfer everyone into one game.

I try to be creative. Lately what I've been doing is when someone would call my name in game it wouldn't be "Taylor, you forgot your running shoes" I made it "You, you forgot your running shoes"
Makes it seem like they forgot my name and I get a hardy chuckle out of it

I've been playing since 1998, and up until B/W2 I had always named my characters something 'canon' or at least something totally different from my name. Let's see how good my memory is:

Blue version: 'ASH' (I still have that thing and the battery hasn't died. It's like a living memorial to my childhood)

Red version: 'RED'

Yellow version: 'ASH'

Gold version: 'GOLD'

Crystal version: 'Rosa' (I'm a physic)

Ruby/Emerad: 'Jeremy'

Sapphire: 'Dan'

Pearl: 'Yo girl' (It was humorous to say the least; everybody in Sinnoh talked like a ghetto hood rat)

HG/SS: 'Ethan'

White: Jeff

Black 2: Brian

After nearly a decade and a half I decided to use my real name for my Black 2 playthrough. It felt... wrong. I don't think I'll ever do it again.

Like I said, sometimes I used the canon name, other times I would name them after my friends. At the time, I actually didn't know about the manga. Hell, the only reason I figured out 'Red' was canon is because a friend told me.

I believe one of the standard names Ruby offers is Terry, right?

So I went with Terry.

Since then it's become tradition for me in basically every single game where I need to name a playable character without a widely accepted canon name: I use Terry for a guy and Fran for a girl. (The latter being a leftover from me playing... whatever was that browser zombie RPG? and roleplaying as Fran Madaraki)

I gave myself a boy name in RBY, but when GSC came around I was like fuck it, I'm anon and Max/Joe/Bob/Ash isn't my name.

I kinda wish I could find a default name that isn't really a name. I like how Persona 4 did it with the voice acting. They still call you by name in the text but what you hear is written so it would make sense without hearing your name.

I may have to try your idea and goof around until I find an universal term.

I went with my real name up to and including Ruby/Sapphire, then after that I've went with canon. But when B&W came out I switched back to real name.
