GF artists are not hired for realism and detail. They are hired because they have a specific style and draw consistently enough that their artworks won't have anomalies anr different anatomy from picture to picture.
Ken Sugimori is no better an artist than some we have here, but he is a good artist and he's good at what he does. The art doesn't need to be mesmerizing, it only has to portray something accurately so that the appeal within the Pokemon itself is noticed.
