That's a matter of grouping and mnemonics though.

The max those memory training competions can remember in terms of cards was something like 25-30.

Unless you have Savant syndrome or something, you either turn it into a long-term memory via study/repetition like you should for Pokemon's types, or you're out of luck if you're only given 5 minutes to memorize a deck of cards.

Only reason why you would not want a new type other than that is that you want the metagame to stay untouched, while it has suffered at least one huge twist with each generation anyway, and I don't remember anyone complaining about any.

Where is this idea that people who are opposing a new type are metagamers coming from?

People who play competitive know shit like Fighting and Dragon are overpowered as fuck, shit like poison and ice are shitty as hell and ruin Pokemon. If anything, they'd want a new type more than anyone else.
