That's intentional, to get the feeling of old yokai paintings. Although the artist went a slight bit over the top with a few ones, he nailed in on others. Love that Raticate, for example.

He's a Nurarihon, a creature who is said to be the leader of all yokai (and a freeloading, bossy bastard too). Basically, he sneaks into people's houses when they are away, helps himself to any drink he wants and literally acts like he owns the place.
