I started a new playthrough on Pokémon White yesterday and I'm at a complete loss when it comes to building a team with this gen. Which Pokémon do you recommend adding to my team? I just beat the first gym leader so my options are limited.

Krookodile is a pretty great addition; you can catch one on Route 4. While I can't recommend it from experience, Scraggy is reportedly a great addition as well.

Scaggy, Petilil, and Rufflet are the first forms, though you could get a fossil and get an Archen, though only his evolution can fly

Braviary seems like a good choice, thanks. I chose Tepig, and I already use pansage as my grass type.

Darmanitan can pretty much do what Emboar can, and since you're going to be taking on the challenge of fighting in-game NPCs, you need to optimize your team as completely as you can, including cutting any Pokémon that might have a better replacement.

Ok, so forget pansage. Which pokémon will become vital in the later stages? Are gothitelle or vanilluxe any good?

You're playing White so you can't get a Gothita I think, Solosis is great with Magic Guard, you can also consider Litwick

You'll find out soon enough that the Gen 5 games are much more story-driven than the other ones. You might want to read what they say.

Vanilluxe is a pain in the ass to obtain but Acid Armor + Avalanche kills pretty much any thing that doesn't resist it. And you can bet your ass it tears a hole into druddigon and Haxorus. Just gotta be able to survive Dual Chop/dragon claw at +2 for them (so, Acid armor, pray for no crits, Ice body heals)

Gothitelle is a premier special wall with Psyshock and Calm mind boosting, which wrecks all kinds of shit. Not sure what her options are for Grimsley besides not fighting him, though.

My White team was a mish mash of random as fuck Pokemon because I couldn't get past Ghetsis so I used the Celebi from the HGSS event, my Black team was much more thorough and though out, 'mons like Scrafty, Lilligant, Archeops, a traded over Braviary, and Samurott because I always use the starter, this was around the time I got into competitive battling and learning about EV's/IV's, etc.

Not all that impressive, maybe, but I stuck with my bros. And didn't have to deal with a single KO against the Elite Four.
