That's why you play through a game multiple times. It's a chance to get those "obnoxiously hard to get" pokemon I've passed over first time around and use them. Most of the time I end up liking them a lot more than the ones I've chose during my first game. That's how I pick my favourites.
It didn't just happen to Lanturn/Ampharos. It happened to Hypno/Alakazam, Grumpig/Gardevoir, Dodrio/Pidgeot, Jellicent/Seismitoad, Galvantula/Zebstrika, Cherrim/Roserade, etc.
You never get a chance to use the other guys unless you deliberately find them out or you do a nuzlocke. I just feel that they're underliked.
