inb4 Baby Kangaskhan. I love that idea and I really wish it were true, but let's just focus on seeing what's under the skull. Although it probably looks just like a Charmander's face.

What if the skull is like the shell of a turtle and is literally attached to it's head, so if you were to take it off, you'd literally kill the pokemon under the skull

Yeah. I also think it should be part ghost type. Just because of the skull representing death and what not. It'd also be cool if Cubone could use the spirit of the mother for an attack or something. Maybe I'm just getting a retarded imagination.

What do you consider canon?
If it's the game then there are multiple pokedex entries.
If it's the anime, I'm pretty sure there's an episode where cubone has the skull turned around on him.

The pokedex could simply be pokelore stored in it for the kids helping the professors.
The skull being turned around could be showing that this outer shell is flexible in movement, creating a 360 view for the pokemon. The movement however could be uncomfortable so that's the reason they'd never do such a thing

Well, Apparently Marowak wasn't supposed to exist. There's a little campfire story that implies Marowak came to be about by a Cubone evolving with the skull still on it's head, the skull tightened around it's head, thus stopping the evolution half-way through, and creating a new pokemon; Marowak. And yes that's a part of the Kangaskhan theory

So Cubone is born as a Kangakid, but evolves into Cubone when it's mother dies somehow. Then it evolves into Marowak where it should evolve into Kangaskan.

Maybe it's a combonation, when the Cubone evolves the skull becomes part of the Pokemon, similar to Slowpoke fusing with the shellder/shellder shell to become one pokemon.
