Why do people like IVs?

No, seriously. Give me one good reason they should stay in the game if Hidden Power is calculated some other way. Casuals won't notice them because they barely look or care about stats. Competitive players constantly hack or breed for hours just to get perfect IVs, so individuality is moot there. What's the point?

Though realistically speaking, individuality already happens due to EVs and natures, so it's not entirely necessary.

IDK I feel like you could just up the EV limit for any given stat to be 252 + however many EVs = 31 IVs, and up the EV total limit to 510 + however many EVs = max IVs. Basically, integrate the IVs into the EV system.

It makes more sense that way from a competitive standpoint, and from a casual/flavor standpoint you're still unlikely to train 20 of the same pokemon and see identical stats anywhere unless you're intentionally trying to.

Iv's are meaningless in the core game, and just a time sink in the post game. All they do is serve as an artificial entry barrier for competitive play.

You would think that competitive players would want them gone, as it means more people would be willing to try out tournaments and the like.

And it's designed so that it's extremely time-consuming to get pokemon with more than 2 perfect IVs. The whole point is that each pokemon has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

But if you insist on playing with perfect pokemon, simulators are the way to go.

The only thing you really need is a good nature, 31 in speed, and not having crappy stats.
To me, a good IV is at 21 or higher, because having 10points less than an optimal pokemon won't really matter anyway. That's approximatively 5% of the stat. It's not a big deal.

No, seriously. Give me one good reason they should stay in the game if evolution is caused some other method. Casuals will barely notice because they'll mostly notice the stat changes from EVs. Competitive players prefer modes where Pokémon are automatically set to a certain level or just set their levels in simulators, so training is moot there. What's the point?

They are a really cool idea when you're in the target audience, which is twelve-year-olds.

Don't forget that, fun though it may be, we are all playing a game meant for kids. Most kids will play competitively and care about their stats, but not breed or hack perfect-IV mons. IV's and the idea of pulling the game apart to turn it into pure numbers is foreign to them, even if they aren't ultra-casuals who intentionally keep themselves in the dark. I know before I knew about IV's one of my pastimes in the game was catching a bunch of the same pokemon at the same level then breeding the ones highest in the stat I wanted because I figured out that stats DID get passed down, I just didn't know how. I wasn't breeding 31/31/31/31/31/31 monstrosities, just playing the game as intended.

Of course, GF is clearly aware that their game is loved by people of all ages and gaming styles, which is why there's methods in-game to find out if you have perfect IV's in one or multiple stats and items implemented almost entirely for the purpose of metagaming when you breed.

It basically comes down to this: The IV's aren't in the game for you and me, they're in the game for most of the players, who are young and for whom the individual traits of the pokemon between individuals are really fascinating and can affect gameplay. Like having a Gardevoir that's adamant with higher than usual attack, you might give it the punching moves and make a boxing gardevoir if you make an effort to know what you're doing and like gardevoir but aren't familiar with Iv's and breeding.

IVs:represent genes
Every person is different and born with different trasts and features. This is what IVs are supposed to represent.

EVs:represent experience and learned behaviors.
Every person learns things and can grow stronger with specific training.

I really don't understand how someone can be against that system. It makes Pokemon have a sense of individuality and real a life like makeup.

It really makes me think the haters are just the people too dumb to understand it

Seriously? Most people won't even catch multiples of the same Pokemon. Most people barely remember the actual numbers of the stats. If they do, they'd still have to be the exact same in level and nature just to properly compare them.

I have no reason to disbelieve them in the way they have set up the game. I do get annoyed by how spoiled some of the competitive players, especially here, act as though the entire game and developement of games revolves around them. If you really think the majority of people who play pokemon and even play multiplayer are 20 somethings working out every aspect of their teams and obsessing over perfect designer pokermanz you are deluding yourself.

And again, realism != good. IVs are the shittiest way I've ever seen of making stuff in a game unique. Natures are how you implement decemt individuality. Easy to control if you know what you're doing and evenly distributed no matter what nature a Pokemon has. IVs make certain Pokemon objectively worse. The people who actually support this shit are the ones being dumb.

Fixed that for you. IVs have nothing to do with skill or effort. I could breed 200 Pokemon and get none with satisfying IVs while some schmuck out there can get good IVs on the first or second try.

Even /then,/ all IVs are are an artificial barrier of entry to competitive level play. If Gamefreak were really that committed to accessibility, they would remove it entirely and focus on a system that's simple to understand and easy to learn.

I don't think they originally intended or expected the IV system to be broken apart like it has on the scale it has. And I'm not saying removing it is out of the question. I was just stating that it was a neat idea that each pokemon is unique but that the idea was perverted.

Sure competitive battling may be big here, it may be bigger than it was when the games first came out, there may be more support for it, GF may have responded to that demographic but you guys aren't all GF does these mechanics for.

Even then, collectors care more about dex fillers, DWFs and shinies than competitive viability and again, casual players either don't notice or don't care. IVs are a competitive matter right down to their very core, and it's something that needs to be addressed because of how inaccessible it makes the meta for newer players.

Exactly. As you said, competitive play is more relevant today than it's ever been - IVs as a statistical variable are not only obsolete in light of this, they're hazardous to the meta's continuing growth. They either need to be made controllable, moreso than they are now, or excised entirely.

IV's are a failed mechanic, if they can make a change that will greatly improve a significant part of their playerbase and have virtually no effect on the rest they should do it. Especially now that they're pushing comp much more these days, there's no reason to be stubbornly holding on to a system that's a major roadblock to that.
