It depends. If it's something I honestly appreciate, I'll keep em around. Torterra looks awesome and has a cool typing, but tepig is still level 13 and I've had B2 for months now. Replaced it with Growlithe. Arcanine and Stoutland became unexpectedly two of my favourite pokes, and as soon as I found Aron, nostalgia from Wild Water Kingdom came back and he essentially became my lead.
I like having the option to choose an alternative, it's more along the lines of the open-endedness of the games, and makes it more of a unique experience.
