Marsh, as in a swamp, as in filled with muck and grime and things that rot. It was supposed to be the name of Koga's badge.

Likewise, the Soul Badge was meant to be the name for Sabrina's badge. Due to a hiccup in the translation process, the names stuck.

In Japan, they are just named by their color.

Because they wanted catchier names. Not so much a translation from Japanese to English, but from Word of Mouth to Game Coding.

I couldn't give you an exact link, but let me snoop around Bulbapedia. It just makes more sense for them to be flip-flopped, and it may be a common myth, but I think it's stated somewhere in ink.

Yeah, there aren't any definite links, but there's lots of speculation based on the badges being named the other way around in other early Pokemon media.

I know, what I'm saying is, if Koga was originally supposed to be the "swamp" badge, and Sabrina the "soul," wouldn't those terms be brainstormed during localization? Seeing as how they were originally just colors. I can't imagine GameFreak of Japan giving the localization team a specific directive for badge names if they didn't tell them to do colors like they did.

They would be, and earlier Pokemon media actually has a lot of instances where the badge names are switched, however in the final games things were quite possibly just put in the wrong place. Glitches and errors weren't just common back then, they were almost expected.

Maybe "translation process" was a poor choice of words.
