He was working on completing the Pokedex for Oak. Additionally, there are item rewards for catching Pokemon, up to 50. It stands to reason that Red likely caught at least 50 Pokemon. Considering he was competing with Blue, probably more.

It also stands to reason he lost against many gym leaders lots of times, since he was ften controlled by incompetent kids.

Hence, Ash has a better track record.

You have to assume that Red has beaten the Johto gyms as well seeing as you need all sixteen get to Mt.Silver.
Also Red has actually beaten the league unlike Ash.

Ash has qualified for, and gotten a good standing in five different leagues, even if he didn't win any of them.

He also won the Orange League, and beat the Battle Frontier, and was offered a position as a Frontier Brain (which he turned down).

He's considered one of the top trainers in the world. He has 16 badges and became the Pokemon League champ. Its doubtful he lost many, if any, matches up until he met Ethan.
