I use a starter when I play through a generation the first time. I am trying to "catch them all" still so, I mean, why not? But after the first run through, and then the transfer of Pokemon to a newer game, I'll play through with specific Pokemon, or Nuzlocke.
Besides when I was a child, I've only ever had one on my team with my first play through of Diamond, and my playthrough of Black. Thas it. I train the rest, but usually that comes after I've beaten the gayme.
