ITT: Emerald battle frontier discussion, records, teams, tips & tricks etc.

Been playing this shit recently and personally the Emerald battle frontier is so much better than the other, almost exclusively because of the Battle Dome.

If anyone's interested I'll post the team I got 50 3/4 tournaments (203 wins) with.

I loved the battle frontier and was so disappointed to see it go. Its one of the reasons I like Hoenn the most. The pyramid was my favorite though. And as far as the trumpets and shit goes I never really noticed it until I read that shit here. Well, I have nothing to add as far as strategies and shit goes but I hear you anon and I am impressed. Pretty straightforward; usually go lead with Metagross and have Slaking in my 2nd slot while gengar is left out. When leading with Metagross 2 things can happen:

-KO the opponent with still at least 1 hp left
-KO the opponent with explosion

If the former happen, the battle is usually won where I just explode the second pokemon to hell and win. If not, I bring out Choice band slaking which destroys everything, and more often than not can it single handedly destroy both opponents if metagross were to somehow be killed by the first pokemon without exploding it to shit

The effort that goes into the beating the Emerald Frontier is pretty much the reason why it's my favourite area in any Pokemon game. It actually requires you to think.

A strategy I though about using was a scarfed lead with trick, then switch to something that can set up and sweep. This can work well, since the doesn't switch.

Round 2:
-Send out Slaking, quick claw activates AGAIN but doesn't OHKO me
-skullfuck alakazam with shadowball

Round 3:
-Jolly mankey uses brick break

The Battle Frontier is the reason why Emerald is my favorite game and my most played game.
I like to use Swampert, Venusaur and a pseudo-legendary, but I have many more Pokémon trained.
It's also the reason why I got into the metagame.
It's just a shame that the AI cheats.

They did. Here's the thing:

The CPU you're playing against in the battle frontier are only CPU's, and as such very easy to beat since they can't predict shit or anything else that require human-level intelligence. So instead they make it so that they never switch their pokemon (which is easier programming-wise) and instead heightens all their ratios for certain events such as paralysis, focus band etc after X amount of battles. Also after X amount of battles (49 I think) they give all pokemons perfect IV's.

From a programming point of view it's a really clever solution. From a gamers point of view; not so much.

The CPU is not nearly as smart as a human being and as such they give it heightened ratios and percentages for certain advantageous outcomes to compensate for you, the player's, superior intelligence.

They do switch though (against Shedinja for example - if they can't hurt it, they will ALWAYS switch, which is why CB Shedinja is pretty good in the Frontier, at least the early battles).

And sometimes in the beginning of a round they give you a shit choice of 6 pokémon with repeated pokémon even, and then the first pokémon they send out agaisnt you is a perfect counter to everything you have.

The rental facility in SS/HG was pretty nasty too because the 7th trainer would use pokemon from the next level up, meaning they had similar pokemon to yours but with good movesets or even worse on level 50 you're using NFEs against final evolutions.

Same here. I just don't get why people hate Hoenn so much, like, I loved surfing the huge waters in RSE. I never got to the battle frontier though, 'cause the only game I actually finished was Sapphire.

You're right there was no Trick Room in Gen III, but it does apply to Gen IV and the Rental Master challenge. In B2/W2 it's almost impossible to get 3 pokemon who actually synchronise properly in that since you can't even trade, but oddly enough all your opponents do get pokemon that synchronise

Also yes, Starmi kicks asses. Other beasts are Salamence, Aerodactyl and Metagross, with two of them and starmie you can make th BF explode

I've used Starmie in every generation of games now, since I bred a decent one up for PWT. That actually makes me a little sad that I can't find something better, even after all this time. Starmie is the only pokemon that seems immune to power creep.

Keeping in mind the concept of choice band slaking being the baddest rapist in town; Hyper beam is his 22" long 15 " wide mega-schlong.

In other words yes, hyper beam is an absolute must. Can OHKO almost everything, and it's not even super effective towards anything.

Be sure to use Faint Attack, since lots of pokemon in the Frontier have Double Team/Minimize, and losing to DT/Toxic anything is simply the worst feeling possible in the Frontier.

Full moveset could be Sunny Day, Flamethrower, Solarbeam, Faint Attack. Or if you don't want this sunny day stuff, then use Taunt.

check out bozo's team which you'll find somewhere in this thread; it uses blissey and milotic as tanks with salamence as a sweeper. I've tried it myself and it work's damn good.

So you're right, it is a raping machine. Not sure if its the best though, but definitely in the top 10 that's for sure.

A Pokemon that seems to be overlooked here is Crobat, who outspeeds everything (unlike Salamence) and OHKOes most things with a Choice Band Sludge Bomb (though it chokes on the steel types).

Together? Probably not very well.
But they can all be pretty good.
Heracross is probably beast in the Pyramid and in the Pike. Salamence everywhere, especially in the Dome.
I love Sceptile, but really don't see where it would be good, maybe in the Dome and the Tower.
Aggron is probably great in the one where you don't give your Pokémon orders, but that depends on its nature.

Sceptile is actually pretty good (though probably not as good as Blaziken). It is fast and pretty much anything that's fast is good in the Frontier. With a moveset of Leaf Blade, Crunch, Dragon Claw and Thunderpunch, it can destroy most of the problematic things - like Gengar, Starmie, Alakazam, Latios, etc...that usually spell doom for anyone with their speed and good coverage.

Try Starmie then, who is probably superior and doesn't need breeding for any of its moves (the offensive moves are all TMs/HMs+level up recover).

Aggron probably sucks (no head smash in gen 3).
