They're weren't. Oh sure they have the lowest replay value in the 4th generation but that doesn't mean they're shit, it means Platinum and Heart Gold & Soul Silver improved so much that it seems that way when you look back.

Red & Blue seem like shit when we replay them. But if they really were shit Pokémon wouldn't be the success it is today. The fact is Pokémon gets better.

The only real problem with Platinum was HMs.

HGSS had shitty leveling, halfassed Kanto, poor wild pokemon placement, horrible rosters, crappy rematch system, ect. These aren't opinions either, these are legitimate flaws in the game structure.

Second this. Although the 4th Gen Battle Frontier was absolute shit. In any case, pretty much everything anon said here is true about HGSS. Plus the fact that Kyogre/Groudon was thrown in there kinda halfassedly and with no legitimate reason makes a shoddy game indeed. In terms of extra content and solutions to game flaws, FRLG win big.

HG/SS was the only game I felt I needed to grind for, and I played through about 5 times and the same thing occurred. Around the time with whole Lighthouse saga I felt incredibly over-leveled, but by the time that was over, all of a sudden the difficulty spiked and I was struggling my way through the next gyms. The elite four was near impossible without massive grinding. I got there with most of my Pokemon in the low 40s.

also it reintroduced decent poke designs after genIII and all those pokes with random fuckin circles (Camel, Claydol, Cradily the legendaries)
plus new babies and evolutions to 1st and 2nd gens

Mt. Coronet was shitty.
Pokemon placement was kinda poor, you get teased with the cat and skunk pokemon but can't get them until alot later.
Pokeradar was nice, but wonky.
The champion, to me, has been the only challenging trainer in the(any) E4 and had a great theme too.
There hasn't been a good battle frontier since Emerald.

And the fact that we got an Electric-type in the second route kinda denotes the whole 'poor placement' thing. Hell, even Shellos was available from just past Floaroma.

Why do people complain about Mt Coronet so much?

You only have to pass through the shitty part twice to get to Hearthome/Snowpoint City (both of which takes no more than a few minutes to get through) and the third time you're treated to an epic journey up the good part of the mountain (with the snow) whilst accompanied by one of the best soundtracks in the game.

The hell are you talking about? Those sprites were horrible, pokemon looked little more than blobs back then and only have gotten better trhough the years. Plus most Gen 3 monster have horrible anatomy and look completely unnatural.

Tell me, how can you call stuff like Gardevoir and Hariyama good? Just for a minute forget how good they are battling and realize how poorly designed they were as living creatures.
