Because Bug covers many kinds of invertebrates, not just insects.
Scolipede, Shelmet, Paras, Dwebble, Shuckle, Skorupi and Anorith aren't based on insects either, but I don't see you whine about that.

Because for the most part spiders/arachnids have the same problems as insects, and adding a separate type for arachnids would be overkill.
I would appreciate poison being SE against bug like in ye olden days, so Spinarak would be good at killing bugs again.
I would at least like some spider-bite move or some shit that did double damage on bug types.
I also notice you didn't include Skorupi

I have 3 theories.

Actually it's because dragon wasn't added into the game until late in development, and Charizard and Gyarados were already too far along, presumably.
