The Genwunners who are simply allude themselves that every generation after pokemon is crap, and Gen 1 is the only TRUE generation, I personally wouldn't class them as fans. I would class them as R/B/Y fans and not actual fans of the pokemon franchise as a whole. I would also apply the same logic to any Gen 2/Gen 3 etc fans who stoically say their generation is the best and all others are crap. They are fans of that generation, and not of pokemon as a whole.
Of course, people are perfectly entitled to their opinion, and they have every right to support their favorite generations but they cannot genuinely label themselves as 'pokemon fans', they would need to label themselves more concisely such as 'Hello, I am a pokemon Gen 1 fan.' Instead of 'Hello, I am a pokemon fan.'
The argument which gets me every time, and its rather hollow Is the 'Oh pokemon designs are getting stupid, Gen -insert Gen name- is the best because it has realistic pokemon designs. For the purposes of this example i'll use Gen 1 to stay on topic.
"Oh, Gen 5 is such crap designs. Vannillite is an ice cream!"
"Grimer is a pool of slime."
"Yeah but trubbish is just a bag of rubbish."
"Koffing is a ball of explosive gas."
The opinions on design are blinded by a subjective viewpoint. Every pokemon is based on something in the real world, to an extent, and every Generation has pokemon based on living things an inanimate objects.
In the end, it genuinely upsets me that, again for purposes to stay on thread, Gen 1 adorers cannot see that all Generations of pokemon bring new and inventive gameplay, styles and artwork. It only gets better each time, they simply need to see that a design they might not like could be loved by other people! Thats what makes us unique as humans and interesting to have discussions with - trading opinions and explaining why we like it, even if we don't agree.
Well, thats just my opinion anyway.
