I think Black/White 2 sorta helped this out by having so many Pokémon by the 2nd gym. Dunsparce, Magby/Elekid, Growlithe, Mareep, freaking Riolu!

heh also got a growlithe on my team, as well as a magnetilo. At first I wanted to ditch these two, but magnetilo helped me tank through the next few gyms, and I've never used a growlithe before, so they both stayed.
