On a somewhat related note, has there ever been a fanfic thread in which someone starts a story with one paragraph, and others keep adding on? I think it could be neat if it doesn't become incomprehensible.

Brainstorming an action/adventure fic
Anyone have any tips on getting around the frailty of humans? How do you write a scene were the protag is, say, in an aerial dogfight riding their poke. Want to avoid the typical 'bad guys miss every shot'.

Talk to yourself a lot. Like all the time. Notice which phrases feel natural, and which ones feel forced. Try to make it flow naturally. If you nail the conversation with yourself, put it on paper.

Pokémon blocking shots with wings/tail/&c. That way there's still peril - the flier is taking extra damage, possibly in weak areas, to keep the trainer safe.

I know that feel.
I actually have a problem where I actually use 'actually' way more than necessary, also at least half the words out of my mouth are some kind of slang. You just have to filter everything and make it not sound absurd while leaving in a little bit to give it a more natural feel.

Theoretically speaking, how would you gentlemen go about writing a character who has been issued into an insane asylum? Would you portray them as a comical target of mock for their situation, or would you go about deconstructing their entire character so that would appear to be scared and/or uncomfortable by their forced environment?

It depends on the perspective, but generally, I'd make him/her/it mocked, but gets out early for good behavior, then later turns out they were put in there by the Big Bad who was an Overt Good.

I'd do my research first.

Cultural lore has so many screwed up totally factually wrong ideas about mental health services, psychiatric wards, and mental illness in general. If you want a character that's in a mental ward, figure out WHAT the character has and WHY it requires that they be in a care facility, and be fucking certain that you're portraying both accurately.

Don't play it for laughs, don't play it to make a pretentious point about hospitals. Portray everyone involved as credible human beings.

Anyway that's my opinion

It would depend what exactly I'm writing and the overall mood of everything else going on.
If I was writing a story that was relatively lighthearted I would go for the first, while something more serious would have the second.
I think in a general sense I would choose the second though.
