What they didn't have is colors all over the place on simplistic, geometric, featureless bodies. Like this fucking mole rat, with his oval feet and hands where the digits are just lines.
That's the fucking difference. New Pokemon actually have LESS detailed artwork than old ones, just more shit all over them.
