I don't want to say that Generation 1 was the best, but at least they didn't coddle you like the later generations.
Though, being forced to take on gym leaders before being able to advance on is bullshit. What if you don't want to grind to level 12 killing level 4 caterpie for an entire day? Why can't they just let me through and level up near Mt. moon?
