My experience as a guy whose pretty casual about everything is that with Pokemon fans, they will ask if you play the game. If you don't they tell you a few things to see if you're just ill informed about the game and then leave you alone and respect you if you still dont like it or care. And with the amount of Pokemon, almost anyone can enjoy a few. The people just seem to like the game then carry on.
With MLP, they ask if you've watched the show, and if you haven't they tell you why its a good show and why you should like it, then tell you their favorite characters and describe all their personalities and why you would enjoy the show if you gave it a chance and kept watching up to season 2. Then they show you the toys they got of it, and its never just a cute doll of a generic character, but a very specific character that no one can really identify with outside of the fandom, and its not even soft and cuddly so you can't just enjoy it being a nice toy. It just looks weird. Why the fuck did you put that on the side of your bookbag? Omg did you really design your hoodie to look like Rainbow dash? Fuck, even the Pikachu hoodies are annoying, this just makes things worse! No, I dont like the show, and I dont care much for the toys either. I cant identify at all with the characters, and its not that fun! And stop trying to nudge that porn book you got at the convention at me. It just makes you look worse.
On the other hand, if someone just mentions either Pokemon or MLP and didnt try to separate themselves or label themselves a fan or a brony, and just kept as an individual that enjoys certain things, then I'd be fine.
