It stems from a desire to set up Lugia and Ho-oh as opposites. Ho-oh blatantly has that kind of relationship with Entei, Raikou and Suicune in the games. Lugia doesn't, but does in the movies.

Most people are willing to run with that for the thematic symmetry, so, y'know.

It gets Psycho Boost, and it's the only Shadow pokemon with alternative colors.
I replayed Colosseum up to Evice today, and just noticed that Colosseum is 9 years old and XD is 8 years old.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Legendary Birds play key parts in Gale of Darkness much in the same way that the Legendary beasts played a part in Colosseum? Wouldn't that make the relationship between the birds and Lugia game canon? I feel like OP sort of answered the question with the image for the thread...

I personally just think it works. It'd work better if Lugia was Water type(and actually looked like a bird which I guess it's supposed to be.)

It's easy to perceive Lugia and Ho-Oh as the death/life co-leaders of the trio. Too bad that's 2deep4theanime and they shat on everything by trying to shove some cryptid birds from Kanto under the wing of a pseudo dragon storm god.

Lugia is called the Guardian of the Sea in its pokedex entry, which is probably why it's in Whirl Islands.

Looking up the entries reveals this:

So no my memory isn't poor. Lugia is just too strong for its own good.

Yes, but attributing the destruction to Lugia is making an assumption. Even if you take it as somehow implicit or headcanon, the fact of the matter is that Lugia's relationship with the birds is at least blatant film canon.

Are you implying film canon has any greater relevance to the games than my headcanon?

Because film canon was just Takeshi Shudo's own head canon. Hoo boy, you should read up on some of the grimdark fanfiction-esque stuff he imagined for the series.
