In BW2 the champ should have been Hilbert or Hilda.

Serilously, the last time we've got sequels we had Red.

Then I totally agree with you. I always felt like Norman should have been the last gym leader or the champion, even when I first played Sapphire back in 2003.

B2/W2's champion should have been either Cheren or Hilda/Hilbert.

I thought Hilbert/Hilda's reason for being absent was touching and enhanced the story of the original game, and I value that more than a simple and predictable cameo.

Cheren, on the other hand, would have made for a really cool champion.

You couldn't change one member of the Elite 4 without changing all of them. Psychic types > Fighting types> Dark types > Ghost Types > Psychic types and the collectively represent the mind, the body, the shadow and the soul. Replacing Marshall would break the circle.

Essentially anyone related to the current audience is disallowed from winning the "big thing".

In the TV show, Ash will never win because we know him, he represents and entertains us.

In the original game, your FRIEND Blue became Champion briefly. He was later seen as leader of a prestigious gym.

In all other games, the Champion is "some guy" you've never really met from something far removed from your journey.

The reason for this is that becoming Champion is apparently so amazing it comes with a world-changing experience where you are offered a billion jobs, featured on every magazine, you probably get given loads of shit (like the villa in Platinum) and you no longer need to "struggle" any more. Becoming the Champion is to "make it" in life, and to actually succeed requires the current media to end. That's why in the games, the canonicity ends pretty much just before you beat the Champion. In BW2, Hildabert is not the Champion. In fact they're nowhere to be fucking seen.

I like this a lot. I never really thought about what being a Champion meant, but the way you put it, I believe that it would be like..the equivalent of being the President in the Pokeworld (that and assuming the Champion rules over the region in which they are Champion)

I kind of like Norman as a regular(no pun) gym leader. His dad's gym is in the town over, so its convient for the sub-plot. The character dialouge hints at Brendan being somewhat well known, but not necessarily for battling, but just for being a Gym Leader's kid. Instead of having the pressure of being the son of the Champion, Brendan can be laid back and cool, which I think reflects to his character and sun-plot and dialouge of the game overall. No ones challenging you because you are the Champion's kid, youre just casually striking out on his own path and not trying to prove yourself

For BW2, because the protagonist from part 1 is mentioned several times by different trainers, it would have been great to have him in there. Similar to Red, so the protagonist would be in some cave/mountain like Mt. Silver. Reason why, is because trainers who mention Hilbert/Hilbert aren't sure where he/she went off to. And because the sex of the trainer isn't implied, then maybe it could have been,

Fight with Hilda

>Play as female
Fight Hilbert

As for the Champion..I think it would have been cool if it was Alder's grandson. Surpassed by his own predecessor? Awesome. Kinda cliche, but awesome.
