So I have this really annoying doubt, are legendary pokemon unique or just uncommon?

I mean, is there only one set of legendary birds or only one Palkia or one Lugia, or are there more of their kind?

The legendary birds don't seem that legendary, as there's no mythology for them in the games. They're just giant birds.

Heatran can be either gender, so it's probably not one of a kind either.

Everything else probably is though.

Depends on the lore of the Pokemon in particular.

Some, there are innately multiple ones of them.

But the birds have been shown to breed, Arceus has created more of the Time/Space trio, etc. There's multiple Mew, they're just rare.

Others, due to the way they were born or some shit, are sort of impossible to have multiples of. Such as the lake trio or Mewtwo.

And then there's goddamned either only one, or infinite Celebi because fucking time travel.

The very reasons some Pokemon are legendary sort of go against what we actually know about them.

There's multiple legendary beasts, but the way their story goes (being revived from the tower burning ho-oh etc) means that shouldn't have ever happened a second time since that specific tower only burned down once.

Things like Manaphy might also have a population because it lays eggs. There are a few other questionables. It's difficult to tell.

All creature lore we get is considered canon because GF will never release a bestiary with all 700-800+ Pokemon with detailed descriptions of legends, dietary habits, and everything else about each one and the games/pokedexes can barely tell us shit. Plus we'll never get a Pokemon game to directly give us any lore, so all we have left is whatever we can scrape together from all of the available information.

In the games, a lot of the pokedex entries can be seen as myths collected by the player from the townsfolk (indian elephant, 5000 IQ). I think that these myths are so ingrained in the people of the pokemon world that they see rare pokemon like Moltres and Manaphy as mythological.

Giratina just travels between two different dimensions. Multiple ones clearly exist in this dimension if HG/SS and D/P/Pt are taking place in the same universe (which they are, as evidenced by the Red Gyarados report at the beginning of D/P/Pt)

The HG/SS event seemed like sort of a big deal to be honest.

He needed an entire room with light up markings on the floor, and then while he was creating the egg he happened to also show you him creating the universe or whatever the fuck that drug induced trip was.

The former is for entertainment purposes and is the canon representation of the character. The latter is for gameplay purposes to provide some structure to the game.

Lore is entirely "Cutscene" Arceus though. And that event stands out as definitely part of Cutscene rather than Gameplay. "Gameplay" Celebi can't travel through time, but that doesn't mean you can ever say Celebi can't travel through time.

For the sake of gameplay, you don't need to ever capture any of the legendaries (except the Tao trio), so they're free to fuck off to Johto or whatever the fuck after you stop kyogre from making Hoenn even more underwater. Arceus created another of the god trio after the god trio already existed, meaning there's multiples of the god trio no matter how you look at it.

Arceus and the Creation Trio are uniques. There is no exception to this.

The cutscene was there to show off Arceus' power.
The event's goal is to give you another Sinnoh dragon.

The latter does not mean there's more than one Dialga/Palkia/Giratina in existence canonically. That's like saying Doppleganger Dante's Force Edge means Sparda had 2 Force Edges.

By that definition, everything is a mix of cutscene and gameplay and every cutscene can be reduced to something non-canonical in nature. But reducing every event to trivialities is a dumb way of looking at things.

This isn't DMC3, because in DMC3 the gameplay specifically conflicted with what we were shown in cutscenes. There is no such conflict in single-player Pokemon, and in fact the two are interrelated.

What? No it isn't. There is no difference whatsoever between this cutscene or any other cutscene in the games.

If you're gonna use that definition, everything is a mix of cutscene and gameplay and every cutscene can be reduced to something non-canonical in nature. But reducing every event to trivialities is a dumb way of looking at things.

Marvel execs are directly involved in the Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man cartoons, but that doesn't make the events in those shows canon to the "main" comic books. That's really a very silly argument to make.

I've watched the anime and the movies plenty. They often directly contradict the games. You still haven't given a single reason why they are "more canon" other than "GF is more involved".

Try actually watching them all and you'll see, most of the distributions we get in the game are related to the movies.

Do you know how much involvement GF have in the anime? It's not actually a whole lot, the anime is just an advertisement for the entire franchise. The movies are more of a promotion for specific games and Pokemon, GameFreak have a much greater involvement in the movies than they do in the full anime series.

I'm not saying the movies are ultimately canon, but they keep much closer to the canon of the games than the anime does because it's in their interest to do so from a marketing perspective.

Therefore, a piece of information that is present in the movies but not present in the games is NOT EVIDENCE that it is canonical for the games, because it could easily be one of the (many, many) differences between canons.
