I could not sympathize with him, his backstory, or is cause. To me he was just another antagonist to defeat, even if he was a morally ambiguous anti-hero.

I don't see why everyone portrays him as your BFF or has the protagonist be connected to him. I always thought Hilda would be more stand-offish of him and try hard to prove his point wrong.

If anything anime!N was the most sympathetic version of N I know of.

I felt kinda bad for him by the end because his upbringing was completely terrible and his dad makes Gendo look like father of the year material, but like, I didn't see 'em anywhere near as close to the player as Bianca and Cheren were.

Because N as a character addresses deep issues we all have with the rather unsettling nature of the Pokemon universe.

N is the first rival/villain whose challenge just "HURR BEAT ME LIKE ANY OTHER ENEMY", he actually looked past the screen at the PLAYER and said "hey, you. You feel good about yourself? About your fantasy utopia being abusive and ugly and immoral? How is it?"

We like N because he's relevant to us players, not merely our character avatars.

But more than that, I think most people who find N interesting feel that way because they think he was right, or at least sort of right.

Every other villain/rival was unable to engage the player because their schtick was based in-universe. At the end of the day, none of us gives a shit if Sinnoh is torn asunder and remade in the image of Team Galactic.

EVEN IF POKEMON WANTED TO JOIN IN MERRY FIGHTS WITH OTHER POKEMON, there would STILL be no reason to engage in capturing them and forcing them to fight on OUR terms rather than their own.

Dogs fight other dogs in nature, too. It's still a game about dogfighting.

As of B2/W2 it's canon that Pokeballs have brainwashing properties (see: Stolen Purrloin subplot).

Since Gen I it's been canon that YOU HAVE TO WEAKEN THE POKEMON BEFORE CAPTURE OR IT WILL BREAK FREE.

You have to cripple it until it can't fight back hard enough, then you throw it in a cage.

And let's not forget about those Sinnoh Myths, in between the ones with pokémon abuse and pokémon marriage, there is one that says that most, if not all, pokémon throw themselves to trainers that go through tall grass in hopings of bonding and helping said trainer

As for the Purrloin, it had been years since it had seen Hugh, and it was Hugh's sister who was its original trainer, not him. It had simply been raised by another trainer during that time. Who's to say they didn't have a rocky start right after the theft?

Yes, the part about weakening them before capture is canon, but that was because it was an added mechanic to the game during Gen 1.
Since Pokémon was heavily based on bug collections and according to some rumours, bug/cock fighting it was needed for the game to have some kind of mechanic that wasnt too hard nor too easy to catch monsters
Cue battling them before capturing them.

Of course its based on bug fighting. Its popular over there: its a minigame in sony's Boku no Natsuyasumi series (you literally catch bugs and then make them fight), Sega has an Arcade/Card game based around it, etc. Its not taboo in Japan.

Quite the opposite, actually - Purrloin was raised by Team Plasma for such a huge portion of its life that it was conditioned to behave the way it did. I don't think he was autistic as much as he was basically intentionally used like a weapon. I mean he got brainwashed enough to the point where Zekrom (I played B/B2) saw the "purity" of his heart.

Anyway, I like N because of how his character transitions. He's so blinded by a forced ideology (maybe GF was making a passing reference to how society operates sometimes) that he takes his father's plan all the way. When you prove him wrong and everything sort of falls out from underneath him, he doesn't hate you for it. He actually is receptive to the idea of, "huh, this kid's really got something here, maybe I shouldn't argue for the release of all pokemon. Maybe the world isn't as fucked up as Ghetsis says it is."

He reflects it in BW2, when he talks to the player (albeit, GameFreak dropped the ball on this one, they should have developed N more in BW2) when you face him in his Castle. He tells you something along the lines of, "Go out and make a world where humans and pokemon don't have to be bonded by pokeballs. Where people can't force their will on pokemon anymore." He says something like that and it's pretty deep because it incorporates a purified version of his original belief. He originally believed in a world where pokemon were free from abuse. The world he now wants is a world where the bond between humans and pokemon prevents it in and of itself.

That, and I like how his room theme and encounter theme evolved. The BW2 N encounter theme is godly.

My main man was a relatively small scorpion that always used the same seemingly flawless strategy:

Also, scorpions are pretty good fighters, but mantes and most spiders are shit at one on one[/spoilers] Mantes, however, could pretty much 1HKO anyone if the other one forgot he was stuck in a closed space with it

He wasn't a self righteous douchebag through out the entire game, a large chunk of his character development was letting that go, and learning he actually wasn't that special after all.

N does have a huge fanbase, and I wish that fanbase wasn't interested in him just for being attractive and ruined his character for their sakes. But I can't blame him for his popularity either, since it's not a fictional character's fault they have a huge fandom.

N was really interesting to me.
When I first saw him it was the usual, oh god here comes an antagonist with all these insane plans. But then it revealed that he was actually pretty methodical and effective to the point that you couldn't really do much to stop him, despite the grunts all having an extra chromosome.
I disliked him in a way, but no because he was retarded and annoying and inexplicably successful like all other antagonists, but because he saw everything in absolute terms.
He was completely right in saying that people treat their pokemon awfully and seriously, how many of you have depleted and entire population looking for a nature or boxed a couple hundred of them for decade.
It was satisfying to finally catch up to him and show him that there no single person has the ability to solve the world by themselves. Like many people I've met in real life, I wished he wouldn't see the world in terms of black and white.

So. Much. This. N wasn't your rival. He was your enemy, your opponent. THAT'S WHY HE BELONGS TO THE LOCAL EVIL TEAM. You spend the game trying to stop him. It isn't until the end you discover he was brainwashed, and then you can have some sympathy for him.
