The only generation I was actually able to go in not knowing shit was R/S. With 1st and 2nd gen I knew most of the Pokemon because of the anime and 4th and 5th the internet spoiled me months before the english release.

If someone somehow gets a review copy of the game a month early and leaks everything, fuck it, I'll read.

If my copies likely to arrive in 5 days and we still only know of a dozen Pokémon, I'll just stay away for a bit.

I knew most of the pokemon for Gen 1 and 2, but gen 3's Pokemon came as a surprise to me. Similar thing with Gen 4. I didn't buy Gen 5 till a good while after the release, and I still didn't look into it, I learnt the Pokemon from the cards, I got Vanilite in every fucking pack, I went apeshit every time I found that little fucker in there, I even had bets with my friend on whether I would get one in my pack when I get a new one.

I definitely fucked up with Gen 4 and Gen 5 by looking up all the pokemon and knowing their stats and shit. Fuck, in White I planned out my team before picking up the game. Definitely ruined the "wonder and awe" aspect of playing pokemon fresh.

Last time I did that was with Ruby. Felt fucking good to reach a new area and say HOLY FUCK THAT POKEMON LOOKS AWESOME and having your pokemon evolve into something completely unexpected and stuff.

Back in the days where my parents would buy me the games, It was great and I didn't know a thing until I played them, but since Gen 4 I've had to look into buying the game myself which makes me think more about it and then in turn makes me look for more information.

True. I remember that by the time B/W released, we knew everything there was to know months in advance and we were playing competitively even though the games hadn't even released stateside yet.

By the time I actually played B/W, it just felt like a retread of all the pokemon/moves/abilities I knew everything about.

I'm horrible at this. I spoiled everything about B/W at japanese release. Meanwhile my nephew ignored it all and went in fresh at international release with the guidebook in hand. His stories of discovery made me green with envy, so I decided to avoid any plot spoilers for the sequels, which didn't fully work out (why the fuck would there suddenly be a pokemon thread with champion Iris as the main image on /v/?) but Team Plasma plot-wise was new which was really enjoyable.
It's hard for me, so thankfully the worldwide release will make it much easier.

Well, op, there are different levels of 'as fresh as possible'.

XY won't be as bad as other games because of the international release. Now, if you don't get it on the first day, then yes, avoid the internet, because everyone will be talking about it. I actually liked that part, the progress threads in /vp/ for BW2 were awesome.

Now, do you consider information from Smash/Corocoro not fresh? Some people just think it's like watching a movie trailer. Others prefer going 100% blind. If you're the second type, then leave /vp/ RIGHT NOW. And watch out for any site that may have geeks in it, since they like to talk about this. Even if you stay away from the specific Pokémon sections, when news hit hard they reach the front page of webs like Pixv, DA, Reddshit, Memebase, etc.
