The pokemon you send will be able to find items and other pokemon through the Dream World, which is basically a simple point-and-click flash game with minigames. The pokemon you find will have a secret ability that they normally wouldn't be able to have. However, only the females with the ability are able to pass it down through breeding. Most of these abilities are far better than the normal ones and are usually valued competitively and sought out for trading/breeding. The items you can get, while usually berries, can also be shards, repels, pokeballs, and even vitamins like Zinc or Carbos.
tl;dr - Worth it if you want Pokemon with cool abilities and some free items daily.
