To list some examples of what I like, things like Nidoran, Lanturn, Milotic, Luxray, Scolipede, and the Lizard, look like unique creatures, with some animal influences. Hell, even ones that are closer to their animal roots like Ponyta and Mareep have something that helps differentiate it from its animal counterpart.
I wasn't a fan of designs likes Sawsbuck, who looked like a normal deer with seasonal feautres added to it, and I'm not a fan of the Robin... because it's just a Robin with a fat head.
Hell, Taillow, Starly, and Pidove all follow the same design too, stick a bird pattern onto a generic fat bird body.
