Here's some Pokedex entries, just to further my point:

Yellow:

The pokedex is an entire encyclopedia of bullshit.
None the less, it's always annoyed me that the only information we'd get on the entire species is based off of what happened to one Cubone and Marrowak back in RBY

I'm guessing that it's supposed to be in-game folklore. Lots of Pokedex entries seem to consist of things that wouldn't hold up to scrutiny, but seem like they would have been believed at some point or another in a more superstitious age.
