In other words, New Type is good against Dragon and Fighting, but weak to, say, Poison, and resisted by Ice

It gives more type options, design/aestetic options, movepool options, etc. It's better than just changing around the types IMO.

Those magical normal type moves always bugged me, they didn't seem to fit. I just wish they called it magic type and not fairy.

The same can be for these "angels" in Japanese games. In mythology, angels were errand runners and messengers. Nothing more, nothing less.
