I have mixed feelings with these sort of things.
With Pokemon, I've always played as the male, except in Ruby. I never played Crystal when it came out, so I hadn't played as a female yet. I wanted to try it out, plus it was more like the anime, so that was kind of cool. I erased the game and then played as the male.
I was tempted to play as the female in BW because although I like both designs, Hilda is my waifu, but my gf was gonna start as her, so I played as the male with the sweet fitted cap and sick high tops. Plus, my gf has dressed up as Hilda for me several times now, which is always awesome.
I do like the design of Y over X (she wears red, I like red), but I'm going to play as X (he has cool looking combat boots.)
As for other games (I'm not much of a gamer, have other shit to do), I'll at least try the female.
So at the end of the day, just play which ever gender you want to play, no one gives a fuck. But, if one is playing a gender to get off to, then that's just fucking pathetic.
