The circled lava is most likely some sort of alternative energy processing unit. You can clearly see windmills, the lava is probably there for geothermal energy and that on the ocean is probably a Hydraulic power plant.

Speculation time.
That's where they try to harness the energy of Pokemon and you fight people.
Or it's an event area where you find some nuclear energy legendary.

Because it's a legitimate thing. If you look at it by itself I might possibly agree with you, but it's clearly right next to windmills and what appears to be some sort of research center right next to the ocean, another form of energy they can harness.

Mayhaps, but that many? It almost seems like overkill. I just hope each cave hosts different species and that they're all somewhat interesting because if I have to fight off a billion Geodude/regional equivalent in most of them then I am going to be really annoyed. Instead of "oh I wonder what I might run into in this cave" it'll be "oh another cave full of the usual" and that's not fun.

Desertification.

The area was probably cleared to create these energy facilities.

I have a feeling this generation will have a environmental issues and alternative energy theme. Xerneas is prominently depicted in a serene forest and Yvetal is in the sky. Perhaps they are in conflict with deforestation and air pollution?

We have these "power plants" in this wasteland and the Generation pokemon, Helioptile, as well.

Man I had completely forgotten about this. It will be really interesting to see the three sections of the pokedex. This also gives us a good clue about the species diversity that will be in the game, which, judging by the Pokedex being divided into sections, is gonna be a fucking lot.

But the Pokedex of XY will be unlike FRLG's Pokedex. In FRLG the Pokedex "sections" were actually used to point the type of location you could find a Pokemon. In X and Y the Pokedex is actually splitted into three sections, each one containing Pokemon from either Central, Coast or Mountain Kalos. I don't see any reason for GF to do this other than the game having a really large amount of Pokemon species.

Anyone know if this castle is confirmed for something else? It seems like it would make a good final bosses section, except for the fact that it is the middle of the map. The Champion may still be in the mountain area though.

I whipped it up last night before we did any further investigation. I picked the sea side town on the grounds that nothing else seemed plausible and the starting town tends to be the farthest one away near the coast.

It's not Stonehenge.

It's an homage to Asterix and Obelix, the later being a menhir artist. Those are Menhirs, an early european art piece, sometimes related to graves or monuments to death.

It has ZERO to do with Stonehenge.
