But why are the graphics so bad? It can't be as big as Fantasy Life or even Animal Crossing but they both look 10x better.

I actually think that low poly stuff is very useful and creative in the industry. If anyone ever goes to /gd/ sometimes they post Low Poly shit, and its amazing how much you have to focus on the limited constraints while still getting a good animation. Usually if you didn't have to worry, you'd have some extra polygons for the fuck of it and texture sizes big despite going for a simplistic cute style.

My point isn't that Fantasy Life doesn't look better, it arguably looks just as good or better, just that bullshots are called bullshots for a reason. The actual game won't look that good. XY on the other hand actually does seem like a real screenshot. It's really not fair to compare the two. If you want to compare it, use something else that isn't a bullshot, and is going for the same sort of art style as Pokemon, like Inazuma Eleven Go. Not to mention you ought to use up-to-date screens for XY.

my standards are that the gameplay holds up. I don't buy Pokemon because it looks nice, I buy it because its a game I enjoy playing.

Certainly not worse than average. Gen 2 was one of the most demanding games created for the Game Boy, and it's a miracle they even were able to make Gen 1 work well. Gen 3 looks great on the GBA and neither Gen 4 nor Gen 5 look any worse than average. The console games, though... those look pretty shit.

What I'm saying is that pokemon is more complex in terms of spriting and small details on small sprites come out as pixelated because they're forced to hold more detail in what they have and it makes do. As you can see, the Pokemon screenshot also has many more colors as well as a skybox to show. There is also a shitton more stuff in X/Y as well, so it won't be able to make things perfectly smooth as it can't handle it.

Thank about this. Your character in Fantasy Life has a walk/run/whatever animation and X/Y's character has all that too, but then Fantasy Life has attack animations or something (I've never heard of it, I don't know if it does).
Now imagine those attack animations for hundreds of attacks.
Now imagine those hundreds of attack animations, but multiply it by the 700+ pokemon for unique animations.
Now factor environmental effects into these.
This is why it's a little pixelated.

Please be a joke. Texture resolution is one thing, but I texture filtering and AA are completely different. AA and filtering do not take up space at all, that's entirely dependent on the power of the hardware, not the space of the cartridge. By your logic, PS1 games should have looked loads better than N64 games. But the N64 looked way better than the PS1. Same with Gamecube vs PS2. The Gamecube was loads more powerful than the PS2 but the disks couldn't hold much data at all. More space=/= better graphics.

Pokemon has never been about the graphics.

If it was too 'realistic' (What does that even mean in the world of turn-based RPGs?) it would just look nothing like Pokemon and would alienate people.

I like the 3D, it's a step into the future whilst still feeling like Pokemon should. One of my biggest fears was that they would get this wrong when Pokemon would go inevitably 3D.

Now I don't have to worry.

I thought the Graphics in the trailer looked very nice. I liked all the people doing things other than just standing around. I liked seeing them sitting in chairs, in cars, ect.
