Especially if they do it right.

Give the mom slightly more character, make visiting her a couple times part of the storyline.

Drop excessive hints that a certain someone is the champion, just like they did with Steven and Cynthia, have them be the 4th member, just to throw you off at the last second.

Towards the end of the game you discover it is the corrupt pokemon league and you have to fight most of the gym leaders E4 style, with upgraded teams before the E4, then take on the champion, who has the other legendary. You lose and you are pursued to the location of the other legendary, which you capture and use to smash ten shades of shit out those fags.
