>>12329019When I was about 16, Nintendo Power did a preview of this game called Pocket Monsters in Japan. I thought the concept was brilliant and I couldn't wait to play it. I knew that I was going to get it as soon as it hit the US later that year... Problem was I was a Junior in highschool at that point and none of my friends were really interested in playing it. It was totally new and nobody really even knew what it was.
My grandma had an old Gameboy of her own because she got into Tetris back in the early 90s. Because I grew up an only child and didn't have that many friends as a kid, I always got my grandmother to play games (I've always been a game designer, too, so I always made her play my pen & paper dice games that were based off of other handheld jRPGs like Final Fantasy Legend, etc)
When Pokemon Red & Blue was released in the US I bought both copies ASAP and gave her Blue and told her to play it with me. She got into it and it was fun. We got Gold & Silver after that. I'm not sure if she played any others after that, because around Gen 3 I was starting college and figured I had outgrown Pokemon so I missed out on gens 3, 4, and 5 completely. Only recently did I get back into Pokemon with my roommate, also my age now (32), with HeartGold and SoulSilver.
I did buy my grandma Pokemon Platinum for her DS a few years ago for Christmas because I remembered she liked the first two gens and I thought she'd maybe enjoy this one. I don't think she ever was able to beat the Elite Four in Platinum though, because she never trained a good grass type...
I actually tried playing with her last Sunday when I called for mother's day, but I had to walk them through configuring their router to WEP so they could get their DS online. They screwed something up and it took down their whole Internet. Unfortunately I now live on the other side of the country so I can't be there to fix the problem :(
