Fuck this shitty thread, I'd expect better from you /vp/. Attract is a unique gimmick and one of the few features that makes the gender mechanic relevant to battling. Its in-battle effect is also different from confusion in that it lasts until the target switches out or the user is KOd (unlikely), making it arguably more effective than confusion against the opponent affected by it. Expanding its target range could very easily make it imbalanced. Like stall? Good, because entry hazard damage is now the only effective way of battling; stay in longer than one turn and you're hit with Attract.
Using a hidden value to determine whether or not the target will become infatuated (as
>>12329604 suggested) makes Attract too impractical to use, as the user must potentially waste a move by using it just to determine whether or not it will work against the target Pokemon. Likewise, a battler playing against an Attract user has no way of knowing which of their Pokemon is safe to switch in, as they currently do.
This is why Attract should not work against the same gender. It removes clarity and makes the move even more of an uncertainty than it already is, in addition to removing semi-unique battle mechanics.
