I still see them on store shelves, but less people still have/play the GBA games, which are now difficult to obtain as I don't think they even produce GBA games at all anymore. And I doubt that they'll make anymore remakes like FR/LG or HG/SS, so it would make sense, if they're going to connect this gen's region to a previous one, to connect it to Hoenn. Otherwise, the next best bet would probably be Unova, with a lot of changes to the map, to follow the whole revamp thing they did in gen 5.
