You know what the difficulty comes from? Spending fucking hours grinding, thats what. That's all you do. Grind. That isn't a challenge. It's tedious.

After doing a Nuzlocke run I agree, any "difficulty" is just from extra time wasted grinding on hilariously underleveled wild pokemon out of safety.

It has, however, given me experience with pokemon I'd have never thought to use that kicked ass, like Grumpig and Torkoal.

I'm planning on starting one as soon as my finals are over. Still need to pick which version to do. Which one is funnest? Not necessarily hardest/easiest, mind you.

I was thinking about doing Diamond, but that game has horrible wild pokemon distribution, with 90% of total encounters being bidoof/bibarel. I fear my nuzlocke challenge will just end up being 6 bidoofs.

I prefer Hoenn, or more specifically, Emerald. The variety of Pokémon is great and the Pokémon are, in most area, natural looking. I enjoy Nuzlocking in Hoenn the most.

Honestly the one issue with Nuzlocke's is indeed overlevelling, hence I'm using a level cap based on the next gym/big event character/etc.

I've found the grinding is then kept to a lesser degree, and I also have to be more strategic and not just use sheer power to win. It's fairer.

That's another thing that worries me. I'm afraid I'll play WAY too overcautiously (running back to the pokecenter after every battle, grinding for hours, etc) to the point where it's not even fun.

Maybe play without the faint->release rule but leave all others in place?

This would eliminate the grinding but it would be interesting because you are using pokemon that you haven't used before.

Then use said level cap. Usually the gyms are well enough spaced by themselves that you won't be grinding too much. The only 'grind for hours' I've experience is training up lower levelled Pokemon. Also due to the nature of Johto in Gen 4 its hard to level much at all sometimes. Johto is a grindier game in my experience.

Hoenn is less so from what I know though.
