I think they might start taking the sequel route. They can't stay in the late 90s/early 2000s forever.

The best bet is a Red/Green remake or sequel since the 20th anniversary of the series is coming up soon. Hoenn's 10 year anniversary passed by with little more than a mention and Pokemon giveaway in Japan.

Gen I has the most fans out of any generation. Go out on the street today and ask someone the name of the pokemon and unless they are a fan of the series, they will mention Pikachu or Charizard. If you're going to have a 20th or 25th anniversary of the series, it has to be Kanto.

Ask anyone on the street a name of a pokemon and it's pikachu or charizard, and possibly jigglypuff. You can point to raw sales of games about how something sold more copies, but remember that there is also a card game, and they actually had a Pokemon Center in new york that they remodeled into the Nintendo World Store after it's popularity waned,
