On topic: When I was around ten, my closest friends insisted that there was this awesome show on TV that had tons of cute little creatures with magic powers. It sounded awesome, and my sister later told me about an episode she saw (the mt. moon one). The first one I caught was the S.S. Anne episode, and it blew me away because it was a cartoon with an ongoing plot and I had to know if they survived the boat sinking. Shortly after we got the games after looking all over because it was damn hard to find. Blue for me, Red for my sis. We get both versions every gen now.
Nothing special, it was pretty hard to avoid at that time.

Cheren and Bianca are still your two rivals, equally showing up periodically to battle you. They also each got character developments, so I'm pretty sure they're plenty fleshed out. N was part of the Plasma storyline. I'm fine with including him, but not without the other two first.

I was introduced to the games because at the age of 9 or 10 a friend of mine told me about this cool game where you could use bubble turtles and fire lizards and fight them and stuff and he wanted me to get the Blue version because he had Red.

Never needed the TV show or anything to gateway me into the games.

Im unsure when i got Pokemon Red, but i definitely know it was sometime before 2000, basically it was pretty large, Anime was seldom heard until Pokemon came along and Dragonball Z got its foot in the door.

UK here, all that i recall is that Cartoon Network had some sneak peek thing where some lame Skatoony guy would gab for like 2 mins and show stuff like the Courage The Cowardly Dog Chicken episode, the Mike, Lou and Og pilot (with the go-karts) and Dragonball Z.

On the other hand Anime got here from fox kids (Digimon, Flint the Time Detective, Samurai Pizza Cats, ect) and Sky One (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon)

But yeah, basically
