In DPP, there was a different version of the same song for morning, midday, and night. It added a lot of personality to the game I felt.

I remember the first time I found that Ultra Ball in the trash. I always felt bad for taking it because one of the cooks probably dropped it in there by mistake. I always made sure to save it for an important Pokémon so at least I stole it for good.

In B2/W2, there's separate audio track that plays only when you move. It's only in some routes, the only one I can think of is the route in front of the daycare, there's a percussion track that plays when you run.

The little things I liked the most were the unnecessary details, like the air vents. Also having your pokemon follow you, even if it was pretty useless. Gen III secret bases, always had such a blast trying to hide mine from my friends.

Oh and in Gold/Silver when your mom would sometimes buy you Pokedolls for your room. It was so unnecessary, but damn, I felt like such hot shit for having a Snorlax in my bedroom.

I always loved the pokemon that show up on a single day in the week somwhere. There should be more of that. I think I had like 15 Lapras on my Gold edition, because I would always travel there to catch one on Friday.

I loved the Acro and Mach bike options in RSE. I wish they would bring the Acro feature back to the bike (so when you're in at the slower speed, you can do tricks).

And the Trick House was awesome. My favourite mini-game/side-quest so far.

Were they ever mentioned by NPCs? I mean, it's obvious enough that they're air vents for the Underground, especially since they can't be lanterns either since they don't light up at night, but I'm not sure if they were ever really explained.

You could hear cries in the overworld since Gen I, or at least in Fire Red (I heard a Caterpie or two in Viridian Forest and a Geodude in the Rock Tunnel)

Why do I feel like I know exactly what you're talking about

I also liked the cell phone aspect of the Pokegear, in principle. Yes, it got a little annoying, but they made it more useful in HGSS. I would like to see it make a comeback but with more of an optional storytelling role; kind of like how Diablo 3 has dialogue "paths" with its traveling companions, I'd like to see developing storylines/background for your rival, prof, etc... but that'd entail a more character-driven game.

Fire Red is Gen III. I'm 99% sure you couldn't hear Pokemon cries in the overworld in actual Gen 1 games, those are the only Pokemon games I ever played with the sound on.

It would have to be how in Platinum, they really polished up Sinnoh. I fell in love with the colors in the game, the trees, grass, water, towns, houses, just how everything was revamped. It's what makes Platinum my favorite Pokemon game. I remember going into that forest, and it was dark, but certain parts had light coming in, I thought that was the shit.

I enjoy paying attention to the small details in Pokemon games that truly make them special.

Pokemon to Trainer Height and weight comparison in Gen 3/4

Small things I wish had returned, especially the comparison function of the pokedex. Seeing the size of the pokemon next to your trainer was really fun and useful too, especially if you were writing fanfics and wanted a somewhat accurate official size reference.

I cannot figure out why the hell they took out this feature.

The pokemon following you around. I wish they would add that to more games. It's a little thing, but I just love it so much.
Also, how in B/W, you could walk over to someone playing an instrument and the music of the city would change just a bit. Like in Opelucid City, the guy playing the electric guitar.
I also just really like the art. I think that's something I'm going to miss in X/Y, I love looking at the pokemon and trainers in battle. It's not the same with that boxy 3-D look.

being able to dress up your pokemon in D/P and take a picture of it, then it show up in a gallery with all of your friends pokemon. Also the fact that the guy taking the picture was a big fat FABULOUS hiker. Me and my friends had a little cult fan club of that hilarious hiker haha.

The Trick House, secret bases, decorating your room with dolls and cushions, the grass covered with volcanic ash, reading braille to unlock the regis, exploring the sunken ship, Diving, the ninja kids who hid behind tree and rock cloaks, the contests, and the cable car thing.
I don't care what anyone says, I loved R/S/E.

Non-RSE related I really really liked ball seals and ribbon collecting in D/P and wish that ball seals at least would have made it into future games. Oh, and the footprints in the pokedex. And walking on the ledge things in B/W.

Thunderstorms on that route with the Weather Center.

Imagine if every route in Kalos could have multiple weathers based on a random schedule. Or weather could persist in the overworld after you change it in battle and NPCs will comment on it or pull out Umbrellas/don warm jackets.

Oh God, I remember how amazing it felt to randomly just find that Lapras. I'd never been in that part of union cave before, too.

Also, in gen II, I loved the part of the ruins of alph where there actually was tall grass, and you could catch natu and smeargle.

Black 2 and White 2 were my favourite games so far, just because of all the little sidequests and features the games had to offer. I spent hours and hours building up my Join Avenue, and probably half that time was invested in the Magnemite Coil. To have a community that can orchestrate something like that is probably one of my most favourite features in the pokemon games.
But also, the long sidequest when you find that girl's phone in b2/w2, and calling her and waiting for her to call, and the obvious crush she develops on you...it was such an interesting feature for GF to incorporate. And the shiny Gible/Dratini you get from Alder's son...damn, pokemon is the shit.

BW2's gym themes being different for each gym made the game so much better than I had ever expected

The detail of some of the cities.

Flomora Town and it's field of flowers, especially its little path it had so you didn't walk on any of them

Slateport, with its beach, lighthouse, museum, dock, and especially the open market. It's my favorite town. It's just very real; like a town that you could see being in our world.

and Olivine:

from the detail of the ground tiles, to the board walk, to the picnic tables, to the ships docked there, to the lighthouse, and the different shaped/colored house, the fences around the grassy areas

and especially the flags around the town that move in the wind.

I always love the cities near the water because they have the most character it seems.
Also, the faceboards in Pastoria and Humilau cities; and the fact that they get used and aren't just "there".

THIS fucking thing. The Battleground was amazing. In fact, the whole post-game Sinnoh was amazing, I would love if they did something like that with X/Y. Wrapping up loose ends of the story, and just taking the time to go back and explore small things you saw during the journey but didn't get into because you were moving along with the plot.

I didn't see it mentioned yet (I might have missed it), but I absolutely loved how the regular gym battle music would change to a remix of the Pokémon main theme in B/W.

I hate to use the word "epic" because it's thrown around so often, but when the gym leader was down to their last monster and that music kicked in, you knew shit was getting serious. Or at the very least, it felt that way.

And it's technically an ancillary element, but I always loved looking at the physical maps they drew of each region. That's actually part of why I'm looking as forward to Gen VI as I am, the map of Kalos is full of details, and I love how the art style has its own feel; it actually reminds of the quasi-"mythical" art style the anime will pull out in its finer-rendered moments, really amps me up for how Gen VI will look/what little details they'll include.

I don't think it counts as small, but I loved the minigames for Pokeathlon. Pokemon following you. Secret Bases. Underwater areas. Hidden areas that were pretty large that housed items and rare pokemon. Stuff that gives you a real reason to explore and find every nook and cranny in the game. I would like Pokemon to follow you and their natures to play a little more into the following you bit. Give them more personality and etc.

Gen III were great games. I think a lot of the hate comes from the fact a large amount of the playerbase was in that awkward stage of "Pokemon's not cool anymore" when it was new that they didn't know how to deal with it/handle it. Gamefreak truly did a good job on making the Frontier feel like a theme park. I actually had fun running around and heading to each places just to fight around and having fun with my pokemons. Not only that, but these nifty things like the Smeargle cave and the shops being all good.

It's a real shame they decided to scrap it for any other Pokemon games and set down a shitty circle with barely anything for a Battle frontier

Seriously this place was great, some random little cave that seemed to be nothing special but got its own name.
Found out years later that it's based off of a real place in Japan where legends tell that Amaratsu the Sun goddess bid there.
Hence the TM lucky day.

I actually visited that cave in real life last week...

The hotel was creepy as fuck, I don't know why but something about the kid having nightmares was really weird.

I loved watching the clefairy dance around the moon stone on (tuesday?) too. Also in HG/SS being able to see the moon reflected in the water was awesome.

Also being able to trade Pokemon with Gym leaders in HG/SS was awesome
