For some reason I seem to connect with / enjoy Ruby and Sapphire's overworld graphics the most, despite the fact they're not my favorite games. Something about them just feels right.

Battle sprites and things like that... I'd have to say Generation 2 had some nice ones, but Generation 5 was awesome with its moving Pokémon. Ever since the days of Red and Blue I've wanted to play a handheld game with constantly-moving Pokémon, and Black and White granted that wish.

FireRed and LeafGreen. Though, I might be a bit biased because I've worked with the games and their sprites a lot.

I feel like Unova could have been very beautiful, but, as with gen four, it suffers from sprites mixed with 3D environments. Seeing otherwise decent sprites get so horribly stretched and skewed does not sit right with me.

Battles = Gen 5

Overworld = Gen 3.

Gen 6 looks to blow both out of the water, though.

HGSS.

I think gen IV had the best overworld sprites, the colors are extremely vibrant and attractive, and the environments are very unique and interesting.

Gen V comes as a close second, but I don't like the overworld sprites as much, not as cute.

I wonder what RS would have looked like if they kept night and day. My biggest problem was the colours were too bright.

I really liked PokéMon Crystal.

I loved how the sprites looked like they were watercolored pieces of art.
As if the style of the sprites wasn't enough, they even moved!
This seriously blew my mind when I first played it at Kmart as a kid.

overworld:

extra fluff - hoenn, I loved slateport, the secret bases, the falling ash, I dunno, I loved a lot of the little special things that made it hoenn

actual overworld - gen IV as a whole, Platinum is superior to every other game, and Olivine in HGSS is my second favorite place; the detail in all the cities is amazing

Those sprites were created before the ones we got in the Western games, right?

I never worked out how we somehow managed to get an upside down Koffing, sideways Cloyster or a Kingler with two giant claws.

If they made the sprites, then made official art with some alterations, then made new sprites that matched the art, that would be understandable, but this seems backwards.

R/S/E I think had my favourite use of colour and style. Things just seemed to work together nicely. I also liked HG/SS too, although you expect things to look nicer as they were remakes.

The older games will always have a different charm about them. I'm not really keen on how they started to mix sprites with 3D (not that I didn't enjoy B/W or D/P/P). Now that everything will finally be in 3D I think things should blend together more nicely again.

I don't know if I can agree with the Gen V battle graphics. It was a really nice change for the sprites to be animated and some are done well, but a lot of them were done very lazily.. some of them looked so awkward and jagged - like Mew's tail, what on earth happened there?
